Metolachlor is a tan to brown oily liquid with a slightly sweet odor. Slightly soluble in water and denser than water. Hence sinks in water. Soluble in most organic solvents. Used as a selective herbicide. 2-chloro-N-(2-ethyl-6-methylphenyl)-N-(1-methoxypropan-2-yl)acetamide is an organochlorine compound that is 2-chloroacetamide substituted by a (2-ethyl-6-methylphenyl)-N-(1-methoxypropan-2-yl) group at the nitrogen atom. It is an aromatic amide, an ether, a member of benzenes and an organochlorine compound.

Soluble in ether, acetone, benzene, trichloromethane, ethanol, ethyl acetate and xylene

Application
Biochemistry Inhibits cell division by blocking protein synthesis; more recent research suggests chloroacetamides may inhibit synthesis of very long chain fatty acids (J. Schmalfuss et al., Abstr. Meeting WSSA, Toronto, 40, 117-118, 2000; Abstr. III Int. Weed Control Congr., Brazil 2000). Maize tolerance of chloroacetamides is due mainly to conjugation with glutathione; P450 metabolism may also be a factor. Mode of action Selective herbicide, absorbed by the shoots of germinating plants. Uses Pre-emergence or pre-plant incorporated for control of annual grasses and some broad-leaved weeds in maize, sunflowers, soya beans, potatoes and peas (1.1-1.8 kg/ha). It can be used in beans and sweet lupins (1.1-1.8 kg/ha) and onions (1.4-1.8 kg/ha). Formulation types EC.
